Day 2 - Canada Day!

After a great sleep and breakfast at Shirley & Dave's, off from Kelowna at 7:15 a.m. Great to ride past always-beautiful Kalamalka Lake, then met Bob and George in Vernon, and off towards Revelstoke and the Rockies.
Stopped for lunch at Tim Hortons in Golden (where I first heard Matt order a "double-double" - horrors!), then across the really quite amazing new bridge east of Golden across Kicking Horse.

Went through Field, B.C., thinking of Ivan and Nina who lived there very early on in their ministry. Ivan would have loved the idea of this adventure...

Attaching a photo taken in Rogers Pass - I've never understood how the first folks through there found the mountain passes (if you're in the thick of the trees, pretty hard to see where you might go).
Past the turnoff to Lake O'Hara - pretty tempting to stop there. But on to Lake Louise and Banff... all the times I've driven through there in a car, I've found myself craning my neck to see the mountains - pretty nice on a bike.

Arrived at Jim's, east of Calgary, and just west of Strathmore on Highway 9, to be met with a great barbeque steak dinner, and fresh-picked rhubarb dessert. Attaching a photo of the large motorcycle cutout Jim and Cathy have over the entrance to their driveway. He is nothing if not keen about riding! Jim's friend Tim had his chopper there (photo attached) - probably not the choice for touring...

640 kms today; successfully passed 3 radar traps without being stopped (which, of course, would only be relevant if we had been speeding at some point in the day)...

Early to bed - a very long day tomorrow, if we can make it to Brandon - we'll see...

600+ kilometers good day but don't push too hard you have a long way to go (typical old guy concern)
Even Major Rogers must have thought it impossible after a couple of tries of finding a way through the mountains. If my memory serves me right it took him several tries each one taking a number of months.
Thanks for sending some time with us and know our thoughts are with you an your trip "crosscanada"
Love Dave and Shirley

Hello Hugh,I am so glad that you are keeping a blog, I already feel like I am sharing this trip with the four of you. Our daughter thought that you should be called the"Spare Parts", after seeing your plans to go to Brandon today I thought that might end up being an appropriate name....it seems a little too ambitious to me, but then again that may be why I was left at home. Be safe, Sheri Braun

Nice trip (and nice bike)...but I don't see any mention of when your first baseball game is or what misunderstood 20th century architectural genius you are in search of? Though you might want to pass on your passing 3-radar traps without getting a ticket secrets to BJW at some point....

Hi Hugh!
It is so nice to be able to read about your motorcycle adventure...it sounds like you have had a wonderful time so far, and the weather has been beautiful, so I am sure you have been seeing some unbeatable sights.
I am glad that you have been getting a bit of homemade food along the way...hopefully that Calgary BBQ will keep you going while you eat at roadside joints until the next friendly food stop!
I can't wait to hear about the next part of your journey...have fun and keep us posted!
love Cara

Hi Hugh,
We are eagerly awaiting news about the last couple of days....I bet sometimes you are all more interested in eating and sleeping than writing.
Glad that Flat Stanley gets to be part of such an amazing trip.
We will be off to Colorado on Tuesday, so we will check in with you from there. Loads and loads of love
Dode
